WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House on Tuesday welcomed the recent announcement from a Rwandan Hutu militia group that it would stop fighting in Africa's Great Lakes region and is willing to disarm.
The statement by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, the main Hutu militia group, came last month in Rome after four days of talks mediated by a Catholic group. The group also denounced the Hutu-orchestrated 1994 genocide in the African country.
"We believe that the sentiments that are expressed in the FDLR's declaration reflect the views of a substantial majority of the FDLR," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said in a statement.
