NIAMEY, Niger (AP) - Firefighters and soldiers put out a fire Thursday that had engulfed the second-largest market in Niger's capital, destroying at least 100 shops and provoking looting as people hauled off good from burning stores.
The blaze swept through Katako market's narrow alleys late Wednesday, sending smoke-choked people staggering into the streets, witnesses said.
The fire began in a part of the market were wooden planks are stored, witnesses said. The market specializes in selling construction materials.
