 HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - The lung infection is gone, and Afleet Alex is off to the Kentucky Derby. With a powerful surge in the final quarter mile, Afleet Alex pulled away from the field and won the $1 million Arkansas Derby by a record eight lengths.
In winning for the first time around two turns, Afleet Alex regained his stature as a top contender for the Derby in three weeks.
"He ran the race I knew he could run," trainer Tim Ritchey said. "I don't want to sound like I am blowing my own horn, but in the back of my mind I started thinking about the Kentucky Derby when he won the Sanford, then the Hopeful" last summer at Saratoga.
