LOME, Togo (AP) - Togo's ruling party leader called for calm in the run-up to presidential elections, a day after political violence across the capital left up to seven people dead, officials said.
Faure Gnassingbe, the son of Togo's longtime ruler, made the appeal during a rally that drew nearly 40,000 people to the main stadium in the capital, Lome.
"I condemn all acts of political violence no matter where they come from," Gnassingbe said. "The youth of Togo need to live among themselves in harmony."
