BERLIN (AP) - The U.S. dollar gained slightly against the euro Thursday after data showed that the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits plunged last week.
The 12-nation euro bought $1.3058 in late New York trading, down from $1.3086 in New York late Wednesday. The euro traded as high as $1.3124 earlier in the day.
Last week's drop in new claims of 36,000 was the biggest in more than three years, but Labor Department analysts cautioned that special factors were overstating the improvement. The dollar largely held its gains against the euro but did not extend them.
