Whole Foods Grocery Store Opens in N.Y.

Friday, April 22, 2005 1:00:07 AM
By SAM DOLNICK

Apple farmer Tom Bauer takes a single apple from a customer to weigh it at the Greenmarket at Union Square Saturday, March 26, 2005, in New York. On the other side of the square, a brand-new Whole Foods grocery store opened its doors recently, setting the stage for a battle between a New York institution and a national chain, with New Yorkers' stomachs and wallets as the prize. Bauer said he wasn't worried about his business because customers came for the quality and freshness of his produce. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)NEW YORK (AP) - The Greenmarket farmers stood behind their bins of vine-ripened tomatoes and organic spinach and eyed their colossal new neighbor on the other side of Manhattan's Union Square Park.

A brand-new 50,000 square-foot Whole Foods grocery store has opened its doors, proudly displaying fresh vegetables and farm-raised chickens of its own.

With honking buses and one of the city's biggest subway stations between them, the grand opening provides an urban stage for a natural food battle between a New York institution and an international chain.
