LOME, Togo (AP) - Faure Gnassingbe could not have become president of this troubled West African country without the support of the military, but he says he cannot lead Togo unless he breaks with the undemocratic past.
Electoral officials announced Tuesday that Gnassingbe had been elected to succeed his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, whose death in February ended 38 years of dictatorship and mismanagement.
Throughout the campaign, in which he ran as head of his father's party, the 39-year-old Gnassingbe portrayed himself as a symbol of unity in a country divided by ethnic rivalries.
