WASHINGTON (AP) - David Wilkins, the speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives and a leading Republican fundraiser, is President Bush's pick to be ambassador to Canada, the White House said Wednesday. Bush also nominated people to diplomatic posts in Malta, Liberia and Cambodia.
Wilkins, who earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1971, twice headed the Southern state's campaign efforts for Bush. He was offered a federal district judgeship in January 2001 by Sen. Strom Thurmond. Bush later that year wanted him as ambassador to Chile. Both times, he said he wanted to finish the legislative session that established a state-run lottery and redrew election districts.
Bush nominated Molly Hering Bordonaro of Oregon to be ambassador to Malta. Bordonaro is a principal with The Gallatin Group, a public affairs firm in Portland, Ore. Before that, she was an associate with the commercial real estate firm Norris, Beggs & Simpson. Earlier in her career, Bordonaro was senior legislative director for the American Legislative Exchange Council. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado.
