WASHINGTON (AP) - Jose Guillen's $4 million contract option for 2006 was exercised Friday by the Washington Nationals, keeping the team's cleanup hitter in the fold and allowing the much-traveled outfielder to establish what he called "my home."
"Our goal is for him to be our right fielder for a long time," general manager Jim Bowden said.
Guillen, 28, is batting .298 with five home runs and 13 RBIs through 22 games for Washington, which was 11-11 heading into Friday night's game against the visiting Mets.
