Togo Leaders Urged to Create Unity Gov't

A group of heavily armed men stormed into the centre before dawn on Friday and held the guards at gunpoint whilst the attackers shot up the main library and set it ablaze, in the latest violence gripping the country since disputed presidential elections. (AP Photo/Ben Curtis)LOME, Togo (AP) - The visiting chairman of a powerful West African regional bloc appealed Saturday for calm in Togo, urging the volatile nation's leaders to form a unity government to resolve a violent presidential-succession crisis.

At least 22 people were killed nationwide this week and about 100 were wounded in fighting that erupted out after the disputed April 24 election, the government and the International Committee of the Red Cross said. Opposition claims that 100 people were killed could not be independently verified.

The crisis has forced thousands to flee. The U.N. refugee agency said the exodus was "steadily increasing, with more than 11,500 refugees crossing into neighboring Benin and Ghana by Saturday."
