ST. LOUIS (AP) - Scott Rolen had four RBIs and David Eckstein had two hits in the St. Louis Cardinals' 11-run first inning against the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
The Cardinals sent 16 men to the plate and fell one run shy of the biggest inning in team history. They scored 12 runs in the third on Sept. 15, 1926, against the Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader.
Padres starter Tim Redding allowed eight runs on five hits, three walks and a passed ball, before leaving with a sore shoulder after facing 10 batters. The first five batters to face reliever Randy Williams reached base safely.
