BALTIMORE (AP) - Promoting demand for vaccines is the key to ensuring an adequate supply, researchers and industry officials said at a conference Tuesday.
"What we've heard from manufacturers is if demand is sufficient, supply will come right along," said John M. Clymer, president of the Partnership For Prevention.
The group is recommending that health plans for federal employees fully cover immunizations for the flu virus and pneumococcal bacteria, which can cause meningitis and ear infections as well as pneumonia. The group is also recommending health care providers make immunization part of the culture of adult medicine, similar to children, who are routinely given a number of vaccines.
