SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - It's serious business being funny on the political circuit. Just ask Gov. Bill Richardson. Richardson's campaign paid $12,000 for humor writers for his appearance at the Gridiron Club's annual dinner and political roast in March in Washington.
"It's an annual event for political humor," Billy Sparks, the governor's spokesman, said Tuesday in explaining why Richardson turned to hired funnymen.
"The Gridiron, a Washington tradition for over a 100 years, is a very important event for anyone who addresses that group," he said.
