Sosa's Foot Injury Tests Orioles' Depth

By DAVID GINSBURG

This is a 2005 file photo of Sammy Sosa of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Sammy Sosa was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday after he failed to respond to treatment for a nagging foot injury. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer, File)BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles proved they could win when healthy. Now they will find out if they have enough depth to overcome the loss of two starting outfielders.

The Orioles put right fielder Sammy Sosa on the 15-day disabled list late Tuesday night, and on Wednesday placed center fielder Luis Matos on the DL. Sosa has an abscess and staph infection on the bottom of his left foot; Matos broke his right finger when hit by a pitch from Jesse Crain in the eighth inning of Tuesday night's loss to Minnesota.

And so, the surprising first-place Orioles were forced to shake up their roster Wednesday for the first time. Baltimore optioned right-handed reliever Rick Bauer to Triple-A Ottawa and purchased the contracts of catcher Sal Fasano and outfielders Keith Reed and Jeff Fiorentino.
