Priest Pleads Guilty to Abusing Altar Boys

Wednesday, May 11, 2005 3:14:02 PM

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A retired Roman Catholic priest who was extradited from Canada to face sex charges pleaded guilty Wednesday to molesting 18 altar boys two decades ago and was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in prison.

The Rev. Paul Desilets, 81, is diabetic and suffers from an illness caused by childhood polio. Prosecutor John Conte called the sentence a just punishment, given Desilets' condition.

He was indicted in 2002 on charges of molesting the victims between 1978 and 1984 at a parish in Bellingham. He was arrested in Quebec, where he was living in a retirement home for clergy.
