Wells to Test Injured Foot on Friday

Wednesday, May 11, 2005 5:34:42 PM
By JIMMY GOLEN

Boston Red Sox pitcher David Wells throws in the bullpen as team pitching coach Dave Wallace watches prior to their game against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park in Boston Wednesday, May 11, 2005. Wells threw in the bullpen so doctors could check on his progress. The Red Sox left-hander was placed on the disabled list two weeks ago with a sprained right foot. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox left-hander David Wells will test his sprained right foot on Friday, giving him a chance to return to Boston's rotation before the end of the month. Righty Curt Schilling will remain in a protective boot until the team returns from its West Coast trip.

Wells will throw a simulated game in Seattle before the first opener of a six-game road trip. He threw briefly in the bullpen before Wednesday's 6-5 victory over Oakland. Manager Terry Francona said Wells would not need to make a minor league rehabilitation start before rejoining the rotation.

"As long as he's healthy, I don't think we're going to waste his pitches in Triple-A," Francona said. "We don't want to just send a guy to Triple-A or Double-A just because that's the way it's done in the past. I think that would be stubborn on our part."
