Report: Talks Possible Without N. Korea

Thursday, May 12, 2005 8:46:39 PM

TOKYO (AP) - Japan is considering five-party nuclear talks without North Korea if Pyongyang continues its boycott of negotiations, Kyodo News agency quoted Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura as saying Friday.

The report, which the ministry could not immediately confirm, said Machimura told reporters that Tokyo is looking at a proposal that Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and the United States hold a meeting on North Korea's nuclear weapons ambitions.

Pyongyang has boycotted the former six-party talks, and Tokyo and other participants have been frustrated so far in efforts to bring the North Koreans back to the negotiating table.
