ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistan has "broken the back" of al-Qaida by capturing several of the terror network's top figures, taking away the group's ability to launch coordinated attacks, the nation's interior minister said Monday.
Aftab Khan Sherpao cited the arrests of such senior al-Qaida leaders as Abu Faraj al-Libbi, reputed to be the No. 3 leader of Osama bin Laden's terror group. Al-Libbi, who was captured earlier this month by Pakistani security forces, was Pakistan's most-wanted terrorist and is accused of masterminding two assassination attempts on President Gen. Pervez Musharraf.
"We have broken the back of al-Qaida and now they have lost the capability to launch any organized operations. We have put a dent in them," he said.
