GERING, Neb. (AP) - A three-judge panel unanimously agreed to the death penalty for a man who killed a 15-year-old newspaper carrier in Nebraska two years ago.
Jeffrey Hessler, 26, was found guilty last December in the February 2003 abduction, sexual assault and slaying of Heather Guerrero. Her body was found the next day by two family members at an abandoned house.
Hessler represented himself in the hearing before the judges assigned to decide his fate, submitting a written statement but offering no oral arguments. In the statement, Hessler said he had "mental conditions that may or may not explain" his actions, that he was remorseful and that it was God's purpose that he die.
