NAROK, Kenya (AP) - Hundreds of Maasai blocked a main road to one of Kenya's most famous game reserves on Saturday, protesting a decision to drop murder charges against the grandson of one of the country's first white settlers.
The Maasai protesters backed down from an earlier threat to invade the ranch run by Thomas Patrick Gilbert Cholmondeley, whom they accuse of killing a Maasai park warden investigating poaching on his ranch. They warned, however, that they would stage a sit-in at the ranch if authorities fail to re-arrest Cholmondeley by Tuesday.
Earlier this week, a judge dropped murder charges against Cholmondeley after the attorney general said there wasn't enough evidence to try him for the April 19 killing. The judge has ordered an inquest into the killing.
