PHOENIX (AP) - Mark Loretta didn't know until after an operation on his left thumb that the surgeon was able to repair the torn ligament and avoid reconstructive surgery.
As a result, the San Diego second baseman faces only eight to 10 weeks of rehabilitation. The alternative would have ended his season.
Dr. Don Sheridan of Scottsdale, Ariz., did the operation Tuesday in Phoenix, where the Padres are playing the Diamondbacks.
