CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - The financier of the African National Congress during its struggle to end apartheid was convicted Thursday of corruption by a South African court.
Schabir Shaik was found guilty of two counts of corruption and one count of fraud, with sentencing set for Friday in the High Court in the coastal city of Durban.
In an unprecedented move, the verdict was broadcast live on national television, as the case could affect the political future of Shaik's close friend Deputy President Jacob Zuma, a possible candidate for the presidency in 2009.
