ALBANY, Calif. (AP) - Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze broke his left collarbone in a spill at Golden Gate Fields and will be sidelined up to two months.
Baze, the second winningest rider in thoroughbred history with 9,010 victories, was thrown to the track in the third race Wednesday. His mount, Cowboy Badgett, broke his left front ankle and was euthanized.
Cowboy Badgett, a 3-year-old gelding, fell at the quarter pole while challenging eventual winner Swiss Steak for the lead.
