 EASTBOURNE, England (AP) - Kim Clijsters defeated Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 7-6 (2) Tuesday to reach the second round at Eastbourne in her first grass-court match in two years.
The seventh-seeded Belgian, who missed the 2004 grass-court season with a wrist injury, struggled in the early stages against Jankovic, who reached the finals at Birmingham last week.
"It was a difficult start," Clijsters said. "She's a good player and she's definitely playing with confidence after last week. It was my first match on grass for a while and I just had to find my game a little bit.
