BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Twelve members of Colombia's navy were arrested after raids uncovered drug-making chemicals and documents linking them to cocaine smuggling groups, authorities said Wednesday.
The two-day operation by the navy and the attorney general's office began Tuesday in southwest Colombia, said Navy Adm. Jairo Pena, who commands Colombia's drug-infested Pacific coast.
In raids in the town of Timbiqui, 280 miles southwest of Bogota, authorities uncovered $36,000 in pesos, jewels, guns, as well as papers linking the sailors to a drug gang that sends cocaine to the United States through Panama and Mexico, Pena said.
