SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A clinical audit of cases handled by a surgeon nicknamed "Dr. Death" by his former colleagues has found he contributed to eight patient deaths during his two years at an Australian hospital far fewer than earlier reported.
A report by the Queensland state health body, Queensland Health, had linked Dr. Jayant Patel to at least 87 patient deaths during the two years he worked as a surgeon at eastern Australia's Bundaberg Base Hospital.
Patel, who was born in India but is a U.S. citizen, is currently the focus of a government inquiry examining why he was allowed to practice medicine in Australia's Queensland state despite being cited for negligence by medical boards in Oregon and New York.
