KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - John Garang, the rebel leader in a two-decade civil war for southern autonomy, returned to Sudan's capital for the first time in 22 years on Friday to take up his new position as first vice president in the government he once fought.
Garang stepped off a jet at Khartoum's international airport and was greeted by about 100 government ministers, political party members and other dignitaries who lined a red carpet and shook the influential former rebel chief's hand.
Wearing a brown suit and broad smile, Garang was later whisked away in a heavily guarded convoy toward the city center, where he is expected to be welcomed by President Omar el-Bashir at the headquarters of the ruling National Congress Party.
