WASHINGTON (AP) - With no news of retirement from Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Senate leaders began prepping on Monday for a post-Labor Day confirmation battle over President Bush's first pick to the Supreme Court.
Bush will meet Tuesday with Senate Judiciary chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., top Judiciary Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee and Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada to talk about the process of replacing retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Rehnquist, 80, who is suffering from thyroid cancer, has been the subject of intense speculation regarding his possible retirement. If he stepped down, Bush would have a second position to fill on the court and the Senate another round of contentious confirmation hearings.
