Gannett Earnings Dip on Various Expenses

Wednesday, July 13, 2005 11:27:15 AM
By SETH SUTEL

NEW YORK (AP) - Gannett Co., the nation's biggest newspaper publisher, posted a slight decline in second-quarter earnings Wednesday on lower revenue from its broadcast and U.K. units, and additional expenses, including for new presses at its Detroit newspaper, The Detroit News.

Gannett earned $338.6 million in the period ended June 26, down from $354.4 million a year earlier. On a per-share basis, earnings rose to $1.37 from $1.30 because of fewer average shares outstanding in the latest quarter. That result matched the average analysts' estimate at Thomson Financial.

Revenue increased 3.4 percent to $1.94 billion from $1.87 billion.
