MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota's Katie Smith became the first woman to score 5,000 points in professional basketball Wednesday, hitting the milestone late in the game against Detroit.
Smith entered the game 11 points short of the mark. With 3:44 left, she hit a 14-foot running jumper for her 5,000th point. The basket gave Minnesota a 63-54 lead.
Smith played three seasons for Columbus in the now-defunct American Basketball League. She's in her sixth season with the Lynx of the WNBA.
