TOKYO (AP) - Japan's Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the government's appeal in a lawsuit filed by a group of former miners and their relatives over lung ailments the miners suffered after working at a northern Japan coal mine decades ago, news reports said.
The decision upheld a lower court verdict in December which ordered the government to pay the nine plaintiffs a total of 82 million yen ($732,000), public broadcaster NHK and other media reported.
A court spokesman refused to comment.
