Apple Shares Surge After Record Quarter

(AP) - Shares of Apple Computer Inc. surged Thursday after the company reported its best quarterly profit ever, with revenue up 75 percent as sales of its iPod music player continue to be brisk.

Apple's shares rose $3.22, or 8.4 percent, to $41.57 in afternoon trading Thursday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock has traded in a 52-week range between $14.37 and $45.44.

For its fiscal third quarter ended June 25, Apple's net income rose to $320 million, or 37 cents per share, up from the $61 million and 8 cents per share the company reported in the year-ago quarter. The company reported the results after financial markets closed Wednesday.
