SEATTLE (AP) - It seems strange for Seattle fans to cheer an opposing player who has been so harsh on their beloved Mariners. This week, though, they love Rafael Palmeiro in the Northwest. The Baltimore first baseman moved within one hit of 3,000 on Thursday night, lining a clean single to right in the fourth inning as the Orioles beat the Mariners 5-3 to open the second half.
Fans cheered each time Palmeiro stepped into the batter's box. Flashbulbs popped on every pitch. His teammates lined the dugout rail and Palmeiro's son, Preston, filmed the events with a video recorder.
When reliever Julio Mateo walked the slugger in the eighth, some fans even booed.
