JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Former President Nelson Mandela celebrated his 87th birthday Monday with his family at his ancestral home at Qunu, near South Africa's eastern coast.
Tributes have poured in for Mandela and celebrations nationwide began with a fireworks display on Robben Island, the site of the former prison off Cape Town where Mandela spent much of his 27 years behind bars.
As part of the celebrations, a torch lit in Mandela's old cell will be relayed across South Africa to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.
