NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Police used tear gas and water cannons and sealed off roads leading to the National Assembly to try to deter demonstrators opposing constitutional amendments that retain the wide-ranging powers of Kenya's president.
Police arrested at least four activists from among the dozens of protesters converging on the National Assembly, witnesses said.
The demonstrators, taking part in the first of three days of planned protests, oppose plans spearheaded by allies of President Mwai Kibaki to change the draft constitution in an effort to retain his powers and weaken those of a proposed prime minister.
