SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - American Indians face higher death rates from heart disease, and the death rate in South Dakota is worse than other states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Indian Health Service.
"We see that many of the counties within South Dakota fall within the highest rates for American Indians and Alaska Natives," CDC report author Michelle Casper said.
Higher rates in South Dakota can be linked to a lack of prevention programs and to too many risk factors, experts say. Many agree that using traditional culture in combination with modern medicine and increasing prevention programs can reduce risk factors.
