BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Commission on Wednesday recommended giving Portugal until 2008 to cut a budget deficit that has swollen to more than double the limit set by EU rules.
Portugal's deficit is likely to reach 6.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2005 and is expected in the next two years to remain well above the 3 percent limit set for members of the 12-nation euro zone.
"The commission recommends that this budgetary situation be corrected by the end of 2008 at the latest and through structural measures," the European Commission said in a statement.
