LIMA, Peru (AP) - Peru said Wednesday its imprisoned former spy chief will face trial in August for the massacre of 15 people in 1991.
Prosecutors accused Vladimiro Montesinos of directing a death squad that killed suspected rebel sympathizers as they held a fund-raising barbecue. They have also alleged that fugitive former President Alberto Fujimori sanctioned the violence.
The announcement came as officials handed out compensation checks totaling $218,000 to relatives of victims.
