Greenspan Praises China Currency Change

Thursday, July 21, 2005 4:46:24 PM
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER

People walk past a money exchange for yuan in Hong Kong Thursday, July 21, 2005. China said it will no longer peg its currency, the yuan, to the U.S. dollar but instead let it float in a tight band against a basket of foreign currencies. The yuan has been strengthened, effective immediately, to a rate of 8.11 to the U.S. dollar - compared to the 8.28 it has been set at for more than a decade - and the new trading regime will begin Friday, the government said in an announcement on state television. (AP Photo/Vincent Yu)WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan on Thursday welcomed China's decision to move to a more flexible currency system, calling it "a good start."

Greenspan's comments during an appearance before the Senate Banking Committee came as the Bush administration, while praising China's action, said it would monitor the country's implementation of the new arrangement.

"I welcome China's announcement today that it is adopting a more flexible exchange rate regime," Treasury Secretary John Snow said in a statement. "As we have said, reform of China's currency regime is important for China and the international financial system."
