Kenya Parliament Praised on Constitution

Friday, July 22, 2005 1:21:19 PM
By CHRIS TOMLINSON

Riot police in full gear in Nairobi, Thursday, July 21, 2005. Riot police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators gathering Thursday in Kenya's capital for a third day of protests over proposed constitutional amendments that critics say leaves the president with too much power. Police arrested at least 15 activists walking toward the National Assembly. Officers mounted on horseback blocked pedestrians from using the road running in front of the building as lawmakers debated the draft constitution that was amended by allies of President Mwai Kibaki. (AP Photo/Sayyid Azim)NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Kenya's president insisted on Friday that a draft constitution pushed through parliament by his ruling coalition amid protests will improve the African nation, despite opposition charges that it gives him too much power.

Lawmakers voted 102 to 61 just before midnight Thursday to approve the draft constitution after three days of violent demonstrations by protesters who also said the ruling party was ignoring a grass-roots review process that demanded sweeping government reforms.

"We have chosen to improve the nation and I am sure we will improve the nation" after years of misrule and abuses by previous administrations, said President Mwai Kibaki, whose allies backed the changes in the draft constitution.
