UMAG, Croatia (AP) - Third-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain defeated three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the Croatia Open on Tuesday.
Robredo was down 3-1 in the first set before he rallied against Kuerten, who was appearing in only his fifth tournament of the year due to a hip injury and needed a wild card to get into the tournament. In the second set, Robredo dropped his serve while leading 4-1, but then staved off a comeback attempt by Kuerten.
The Spaniard will face Serbia-Montenegro's Janko Tipsarevic in the second round. Tipsarevic defeated Belgium's Dick Norman 6-0, 6-0.
