CORNING, N.Y. (AP) - Corning Inc. posted a 53 percent jump in second-quarter profit, propelled by higher demand for ultra-thin glass used in flat-screen computers and televisions. The results beat Wall Street's forecasts.
The industrial materials maker said Tuesday it earned $165 million, or 11 cents a share, in the April-to-June period, up from $108 million, or 7 cents a share, in the second quarter of 2004.
Sales jumped 17 percent to $1.141 billion from $971 million a year ago.
