UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Nigeria's foreign minister says he is very optimistic that the African Union and Brazil, Germany, India and Japan can agree on a plan to expand the U.N. Security Council that will win approval from the United Nations.
Oluyemi Adeniji told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday that African leaders will probably hold an emergency meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, next week to confirm the agreements reached in London on Monday.
But Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Algeria's U.N. Ambassador Abdallah Baali protested that no agreement was reached at the London meeting.
