UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Friday to extend an arms embargo and other sanctions against Congo for another year.
In July 2003, the council authorized an arms embargo for a year on foreign and Congolese armed groups and militias in the provinces of North and South Kivu and the Ituri district, as well as to groups throughout the country that did not accept a cease-fire in the country's long-running war. Because fighting in eastern Congo continued, the arms embargo was extended for another year in July 2004.
As part of stepped-up efforts to bring peace to the volatile east, the Security Council in April widened the arms embargo "to any recipient" of weapons in the country. It also authorized a travel ban and asset freeze on violators.
