Wednesday, August 03, 2005 8:22:43 PM

In this image released by NASA TV, a camera attached to the space shuttle Discovery's robotic arm shows astronaut Steve Robinson working on the removal of gap fillers on the underside of the Discovery, Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005. This is the first time in spacewalking history that an astronaut has ventured under the belly of a space shuttle and performed repairs. (AP Photo/NASA TV)MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - The astronaut who pulled off the first inflight repair of a shuttle's underside designed homemade aircraft as a boy and dreamed of flying in outer space, people in his hometown said Wednesday.

Stephen Robinson, 49, has been fascinated his entire life by flight and was always drawn to work at NASA. He grew up idolizing John Glenn and then cruised in space with him in 1998.

On the shuttle, he is carrying a lunch box from the TV show "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet," which he once used for sandwiches at elementary school.
