NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - Mauritania's new military strongman, who overthrew the president in a bloodless coup this week, assured politicians Saturday that no member of the 17-man junta will run in elections they say will take place in less than two years.
Ely Ould Mohamed Vall made the pledge during a meeting Saturday with heads of more than 30 political parties in the capital, Nouakchott, according to Ahmed Ould Daddah, a top politician who heads the opposition Rally of Democratic Forces.
Vall also promised that elections would be held in the West African country after a "transition period that will not last longer than two years," Ould said.
