JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - A second union joined the largest strike to hit South Africa's key gold mining sector since 1987 early Tuesday, shutting down most mines in the world's top gold-producing country.
About 10,000 members of the Solidarity Trade Union walked off the job at midnight after wage negotiations collapsed last week. More than 70 percent of the country's 130,000 gold miners are now on strike, and a third union with 16,000 members could join Friday.
Union officials said they were waiting for employers to schedule a new round of negotiations.
