LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man who allegedly used his daughter as a shield during a shootout with police had large amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine in his system when officers shot him to death, coroner's officials said Wednesday.
A toxicology report also showed the drugs were not metabolized, indicating that Jose Pena, 34, had taken them shortly before he was killed, said county coroner spokesman Lt. Ed Winter.
Pena was holding his 19-month-old daughter, Suzie, as he fired a handgun at officers who had cornered him at his Watts auto repair business on July 10 following an hours-long standoff. The toddler was shot by officers in the gun battle and one officers was wounded.
