ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles Angels right-hander Paul Byrd was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday night against Toronto because of back spasms.
Byrd's turn in the rotation will be taken by left-hander Joe Saunders, who will make his major league debut.
Saunders, 24, was the 12th overall pick in the June 2002 draft out of Virginia Tech. He began this season at Double-A Arkansas, where he was 8-4 with a 3.49 ERA in 18 starts. He was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on July 14, and went 3-3 with a 3.46 ERA in six starts.
