Texas Coach Goes From Farming to Football

Monday, August 22, 2005 9:50:38 PM
By JOHN McFARLAND

West Texas A&M first-year coach Don Carthel looks over some of his defensive players, including linebacker Jason Burns (58), as players go through their workouts Aug. 5, 2005, in Canyon, Texas. After 14 years of leaving the sport all together, returning to work the West Texas farm where he grew up in order to spend more time with his two children, Carthel is headed back on the sideline as the coach at West Texas A&M. He quit.

In order to spend more time with his two children, Carthel gave up the game all together and returned to work the West Texas farm where he grew up.

Fourteen years later, with those kids now living on their own, Carthel is headed back to the sideline as coach at West Texas A&M.
